James Wilton, DPM, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the leader of the Missions of Hope to help patients suffering with nerve problems related to Hansen's Disease (Leprosy), is shown here with Sister Annie, the Director of the Father Damien House.
The Dellon Institute logo is located next to the flag of Ecuador. Surgeons trained by A Lee Dellon, MD, PhD have made 5 trips to diagnose and operate on peripheral nerve entrapments in these patients , whose disease is no longer contagious thanks to antibiotic treatment, but whose peripheral nerves remain a main cause of their progressive disability. James Wilton, DPM has been responsbile for organizing and fund raising for each of these trips.
Their next trip is planned for April 2009. Approximately 150 operations have been performed to date on both upper and lower extremities, restoring sensation and movement to most of these patients. In 2005, A Lee Dellon, MD, PhD was awarded the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation Essay Award for his description of Hope for this Biblical disease by application of the principles of periperal nerve surgery.
